Want to reach Ladakh by road instead of flying in? You spend one night on a houseboat on Dal Lake, one in Kargil, four in Leh and one each in camps at Nubra and Pangong, with your own SUV and driver from Srinagar. You cross Zojila and pass Lamayuru on the way to Leh, so your body gets used to the height slowly. Once you reach Leh, a Ladakh-registered SUV takes over, as the local union rule asks. It takes you to Thiksey and Hemis, over Khardung La to the Hunder dunes and on to Pangong. Breakfast and dinner are included, and it runs June to September.

Under the local union rule, outside cabs cannot do sightseeing in Ladakh. Your Srinagar SUV brings you to Leh, and a Ladakh-registered SUV does Leh, Nubra and Pangong.
Going by road helps your body adjust slowly, and Day 4 starts with a rest morning in Leh. Drink water, go slow, and check with your doctor first if you have heart or breathing trouble.
June to September, while Zojila and the high passes are usually open. Snow or landslides can still close a road; extra nights caused by closures are paid at actual cost.
